Does your London, Middlesex or Surrey company produce a large amount of scrap metal waste? Do you have some household rubbish you need to get rid of but can’t get to your local recycling centre in order to dispose of the metal items safely? Are you unsure what constitutes scrap metal in the first place? At Barnes Recycling, we have the answers for you and are more than happy to help. From recycling services to commercial waste, office to garden and house clearances, we’re the waste management company to call for all your collection needs in the areas we cover.

What is Scrap Metal?

The term refers to surplus metal which is old or considered waste. Found in both domestic and commercial properties – without us even realising it – scrap metal is not actually ‘scrap’ at all. Most of the time it can be recycled into other products, making it a profitable commodity which is also environmentally friendly.

Our team at Barnes Recycling is happy to offer advice about what you can and can’t recycle as scrap metal. We’ll arrange to collect the items from your home, property or site in London, Middlesex or Surrey at a time to suit you, so we don’t inconvenience neighbours or surrounding businesses. If this means arriving extremely early or very late, we’re happy to do so. It’s all part of the services we provide as a leading waste management company serving the capital and the surrounding areas.

Types of Scrap Metal

We separate the metal into two categories – ferrous and non-ferrous. The former includes any material which contains iron or steel, such as cast iron, alloy steel, metal carbon steel, stainless steel, and wrought steel. They can’t be recycled immediately but rather have to be melted down, purified and recast before they can be reused.

The latter, i.e. non-ferrous metal, refers to any relevant material which will not lose its chemical properties during the recycling process. Examples of non-ferrous metals include:

  • Aluminium

  • Brass

  • Copper

  • Lead

  • Nickel

  • Tin

  • Titanium

  • Zinc

Lighter than their ferrous counterparts, non-ferrous metals are used where strength is vital but weight is also an issue, such as in the aircraft industry. They can be recycled over and over again, reducing the pressure on the environment as a result and also lowering the amount of scrap metal waste going to landfills in the greater London, Middlesex and Surrey areas.
